A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was proposed pending a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
